The Rock-itt : July 2012
Report by Danielle Kifooti July 2012 Review with Paddy McClellan Photos by Bill Sheridan Pete Johnson Here we are into July and back with our Beacon Hill Bears “A Reserves” Rugby League Team. The boys have really played their hearts out to get that first illusive win under their belts this season and on occasions have looked as though they might have had it in the bag, then it just seemed to slipped away from them. But win or no win our Bears kept turning up bringing that Bear spirit with them and it was against Asquith, on a cold wet miserable Sunday afternoon, our Bears put on their game faces and went out and notched up their first win of the season to the delight of Bears’ punters. Conditions were terrible, constant rain hampered proceedings and the field (which includes a massive dirt cricket pitch) was more mud than grass. Asquith scored a quick try after just 4 minutes momentarily stunning our Bears. The try was converted for an early 6-0 lead to Asquith. Dashing 5/8, Chris Perceval then scored for Beacon Hill, and with the conversion unsuccessful, the score stood at 6-4. Now on a roll, Corey Stewart stand in hooker, went in again for Beacon Hill and the try was converted by our number 10 Tristan ‘Chook’ Glasson to takeustoahalftimeleadof10to6. Asquith kicked off the second half with the rain still bucketing down. Chris Perceval scored the first try after the break and his second for the day. The conversion was unsuccessful, we were now looking at a score of 14 points to 6, Bears in front. Bears Lock, Scott Taylor was next to put it down over Asquith’s line with ‘Chook’ Glasson narrowly missing the kick which took the score to 18-6 lifting the Bears confidence and putting them well in front With the clock ticking over and 5 minutes to go , still thinking they were a chance, Asquith scored again and converted to bring the score to 18-12. . A very tense 5 minutes followed with ball handling errors on both sides due to the atrocious conditions, yet the Bears came up trumps with their first win for the season, with 18-12 being the final score. Best and Fairest were – 3 points, Chris Perceval (#6) – 2 points, Darrel Thorpe- Sinclair (#10) – 1 point, Terence Wilkinson (#7). Congratulations, Bears you certainly and whole heartedly deserved your win.........Paddy. The next game in the draw for our Beacon Hill Bears was a Bye. Next up was Willoughby (24th June) at Beacon Hill Oval where Bears recorded their second win of the season. Beacon Hill kicked off and it was obvious by the aggression shown the Bears were here to play footy. First try was for Beacon Hill, Terence Wilkinson(#7) and converted by Tristan Glasson. Willoughby managed to scamper over for a converted try before the Bears, Tevita Ryan(#2) also converted by Tristan Glasson. Beacon Hill went into the break with an 18-6 lead. After the break the battle continued. Beacon Hill again scored first through Chris Perceval(#6). This game was a torrid affair with both sides putting everything into it. Full time score..... Beacon Hill 34 def Willoughby 18. Try scorers - Terence Wilkinson (#2), Tevita Ryan, Chris Perceval, Bobby Haeri and Dylan Grogan. Conversions - Tristan Glasson (4/5), Chris Perceval (1/1). Season after disappointing season, the Bears have kept fronting up and struggling to get a competition point on the board. Now they have 4 points up there. Well done lads! You’re on the way. The drought is finally over.
