The Rock-itt : July 2012
UNDER THE STARRY SKY The second event was ‘Under the Starry Sky’ when indigenous and some non- indigenous students from the 13 Peninsula Community of Schools pitched tents on the school oval and then took part in various indigenous activities before sleeping in their tents over night. Students in their school groups created artworks of what “Under the Starry Sky ‘ meant to them. This was then followed with indigenous games in the hall. Uncle Max performed a smoking ceremony while two students played the didgeridoo. Some of the special guests were MP Rob Stokes, Mayor Harvey Rose, DEC Aboriginal Education Project Officer, Dave Lardner and two local descendants of the Guringai people, Neil Evers and Laurire Besum, who all joined in for a barbecue dinner. After dinner students listened to Dreamtime stories and slept in their tents. They woke early the next morning to a breakfast of hot damper and jam. Teachers supervising students had to rush home and freshen up ready to teach the next day.
