The Rock-itt : April 2012
Anna Hall co founder and President of Companion Rabbit Advocates and Secretary of Animal Liberation NSW. Please don’t. A rabbit is an expensive, time consuming, long term commitment and defiantly not an impulse buy or suitable unsolicited gift for someone else, particularly a young child. http://www.makeminechocolate.org/ An appropriately cared for rabbit will live for about ten years though many are known to go on to become teenagers. Their vet bills, are just as expensive as those for other companion animals and currently there is no pet insurance for rabbits in Australia. Their food bill while not prohibitive, will include plenty of fresh vegetables and unlimited supply of hay. http://companionrabbits.org/ All rabbits should be treated as part of the family, similarly to any dog or cat. This means rabbit proofing your house so they can live with you. It Is unkind and dangerous to keep rabbits permanently in outdoor cages. Outside they are subject to attach from insects which can result in fly strike and cruel diseases such a myxomatosis or rabbit calic virus. The northern beaches are a particularly dangerous areas for this, as some councils and National Parks deliberately spread these di seases. http://www.rabbit.org/ If after undertaking your research you still wish to live with a rabbit please remember adoption is the loving option. Some Sydney pounds have over a 75% kill rate for beautiful and healthy rabbits because too many people chose to buy and breed rather than adopt. Please also remember that it is the very same companion rabbits that are hurt daily in research labs, mostly in non medical testing, such as the infamous Draize test on rabbit eyes for makeup and toiletries. New Zealand whites popular with vivisectionists are also commonly used in Australian intensive farming Wild rabbits are also sentient creatures and it is because Animal Liberation NSW, is one of the few organizations that will campaigns to reduce hum an inflicted suffering on them , as well as more fashionable and equally wonderful animals, such as whales, that I joined the organization many years ago. http://animal-lib.org.au/ Rabbits are intelligent, loving animals who care deeply for each other, caring humans and value their own lives. So please do what you can to reduce their suffering and if you do adopt a house rabbit congratulations on making such a life enhancing commitment. Rabbits and humans celebrate International Rabbits Day
