The Rock-itt : April 2012
There was a lot of competition between The Beatles and the Pacemakers which at times caused friction between the two groups which got a little heated, but Epstein, always the peacemaker, would intervene, cool things down, and kept things running on an even keel. But as I’ve mentioned previously, the Beatles had so much talent in-house that there was no group of that time which could get near enough to knock them off the top of the heap. Next issue we will be back with some more great entertainers from the era of The British Invasion.... So until then...... Please, Please, Me Oh Yeah! By not drink driving.....Cheers Pete. From here on in the young Liverpudliun songstress never looked back. With Brian Epstein at the helm directing her career, The Beatles writing songs for her and producer, George Martin producing her recordings, Cilla began ascending to the top of the female entertainment heap and she was exulted throughout the music fraternity as fabulous Cilla. At the same time, Cilla was riding the Epstein train to success so was another Liverpool group in Epstein’s stable. Gerry and the Pace Makers wer e also making a very large splash in the music pool. Brian Marsden, front man for the group, had a great vocal range and was very handy with the quill. He knocked up some good catchy tunes which were very radio friendly and which did well in the British chart ratings. The group were right up there with The Beatles at one stage with some pop classics such as How Do You Do It, I like It, You’ll never W alk Alone, Don’t Let the Sun Catch You Crying and Ferry Cross the Mersey, which was the film track they also starred in at the cinema.
