The Rock-itt : January 2012
CROATIA When I decided to visit Croatia, it was to just go som ewhere different and I loved the idea of being on a small boat. I really dislike very large ships and I appreciate the economies of scale, but a runaway town is not for me a good place to have a holiday. I really knew nothing much of the history of the place and I should have got hold of a good guide book and spent a bit of time getting to know about it. That whole area of Croatia, Bosnia Macedonia and Herzogovinia are loaded with history. So many different cultures have left their mark. Because of the long period of being Yugoslavia under Tito, who of course was one of the communist dictators for the period of post 1945 to the end of the 1980’s, we tended to forget their existence. At the breakup of the communist bloc, the individual nations squabbled with disastrous results, causing of the war in the early 1990’s. This makes the recovery of what I saw, which was really very little all the more remarkable. I had been told that autumn was a good tim e to go and the cheapest fares were available at that tim e. The area is renowned for its fish and what I ate there was beautifully fresh. I am sorry I did not arrange to stay land wise for longer having got that far. The roads appeared good and public transport reasonable. The one thing I did notice is that the people there are heavy smokers, but they are tidy in disposing of the waste. There is good YHA accommodation there, which usually means a good selection of medium priced hotels. There are also ferry services to the inhabited islands. There are nearly 2000 islands as part of Croatia but of course many are not inhabited. I would like to revisit and see more of Croatia and perhaps the other countries in that area as well, but time is catching up with me as I realised when I decided not to walk the old walls. So I am unlikely to go back. My plans for 2012 are to revisit South Am erica and visit Argentina and Chile.
