The Rock-itt : December 2011
Christmas is upon us and the marketing elves are anxious that we spend like Loon- ey’s even though the financial World around us is crumbling. W e won’t disappoint them and even though the majority of us do not believe the fairy tale of Christmas we will join in and feel obliged to splash the cash. The death knell is sounding for the CD, probably by the end of next year the only way you will buy an acts album will be via a download, at least a major label act. So whilst there are a few CD’s from major acts this Christmas the CD format going forward is only likely to be available in special editions, boxed sets con- taining rare tracks or pieces of memorabilia I’ve highlighted a few of those currently available below and added a few more sug- gestions. I thought I would try to run through a few ideas for prezzies for the whole family and who better to start with than Mum. She’s probably got more Andre Rieu than she knows what to do with so how about some- thing in the same vein but with a bit more authenticity. Every New Years Day SBS TV run the Vienna Philharmonic's New Year's Concert from Vienna, it is the best-known classical event in the world and is seen by millions on TV worldwide. The package of the New Year's Day’s Concert 2011 comes complete on 2CDs and a DVD. The 2011 concert was conducted by Austrian-born Franz W elser-Möst - newly installed as the music director of the Vienna State Opera and Music Director of the Cleveland Sym- phony Orchestra. The New Year's Concert features a groovy program of Strauss favour- ites "On the Beautiful Blue Danube," "Radetsky March" and six concert premieres for the night, it will cost you $26 and Mum will love it. Alternatively if she is deaf you could get her the new Susan Boyle album! Got Mum, now Dad. If he’s a “Rev Head” then it’s going to be easy because the DVD of Ayrton Senna’s life goes on sale Decem- ber 8th . It’s snappily called “Senna” and if you get a move on and pre order it from Sanity you’ll get a smart green “Senna” cap, two prezzies in one! If he’s not a Rev Head then you can’t go past the special edition of Martin Scorsese’s documentary on George Harrison; “Living In The Material World”. Two DVD’s a CD of unreleased tracks plus a 96- page book. The film had rave reviews when it ran in theatres, now it hits DVD and it’s a winner! Do you have a younger sister? If so it’s the new Justin Bieber box set for her, it’s not a bad Xmas album, Available as a Deluxe CD edition including four bonus tracks plus a bonus DVD. The album is a seasonal mix of traditional Christmas standards and newly penned holiday music largely co-written by Justin Bieber. It includes 'All I Want For Christmas Is You' (a duet with Mariah Car- ey), 'Fa La La' (featuring Boyz II Men), 'The Christmas Song' (featuring Usher) and much more. She will probably already have the new Har- ry Potter DVD, “Harry Potter And The Death- ly Hallows part two” but if she hasn’t there’s your alternative. JB HiFi have it in a 3D Combo gift pack which includes a set of house pins or bookmarks and if you really want to go mad there is a complete 8 Film Blue Ray Harry Potter collection which boasts 11 discs and a 48 page book with stills from all eight films. Slightly older sister? Get her Rihanna’s new album but watch for the rude words. “Talk That Talk” is her sixth studio album and is the follow-up to the phenomenally successful “Loud”. The album includes the single "W e Found Love" featuring Calvin
