The Rock-itt : September 2011
Dubai is opulence, pure and simple. Dubai Mall, the Mall of the Emirates are just two of the most exquisite shopping malls you could wish to find. All the big names are there in architectural splendor. In one of the Malls you can even SKI whilst outside the mercury pushes 50 degrees C! The other stunning building is the Burg al Arab, a 7 star hotel on the beach across a heavily guarded causeway that connects it to the mainland. If you arrive their without a qualifying appointment, you will be turned back. It is recommend that you ring ahead and pre book a High Tea, which although not cheap enables you access and to sample the life of the rich and famous. However you could still be turned back if your clothing is not suitable to custom ers of a 7 star nature! For those of you who love shopping for gold and silver the Gold Souk on the north side of the Dubai Creek is a must see although beware the numerous Indian hawkers who are determined to sell imitation watches and Polo shirts to unsuspecting tourists. As with all copies, you cannot be sure that they will work when you get home and I saw one person buy a copy of an iPhone 4 and it was nothing like the real thing when it was charged. Nearby is a Spice Souk though to be fair it is NOTHING like the one in Istanbul which is probably the best example of a Spice market I have ever s een. A trip across the creek to the southern shore is a must and there is another series of markets which sell clothing and hawking is much less in evidence.
