The Rock-itt : July 2011
Beaches’ ‘Young Gun’ Off to Hollywood By Pete Johnson I met Dane Cox, a 17-year-old musician, guitarist, singer/songwriter from the Northern Beaches last month, who will be representing Australia at the 2011 “World Championships of Performing Arts” (WCOPA) in July this year, in Hollywood (Los Angeles), USA. Dane will be competing in the under 16–17 years, (Songwriting & Guitar Instrumental) categories. I asked Dane how all of this got started, this is what he said. “I was discovered on YouTube by a talent scout agency that represents the competition. They made immediate contact with me at the end of 2010, and told me that they believe I have a potentially huge future in the ‘American’ music industry because of my Songwriting, Guitar playing skills and my Marketability. They told me that they believe I have the "X" factor.” Over 75,000 applicants from 50 countries including the USA auditioned for a spot to compete at the 15th anniversary at what is often cited as the official "Talent Olympics", and a total of 5,000 were selected. Australia was to select just 25 representatives to send over to Hollywood, meaning Dane is one of only 25 out of all Australia to represent his country at this prestigious international event. Hundreds of ‘Big Players’ such as agents, managers, casting directors, producers and record labels from the entertainment industry in Hollywood, Nashville and New York are invited to judge, conduct seminars and “go-sees” at this eight-day conclusive world championships for talent – and our Dane will be right there in the thick of it. Possibly with a bit of luck on his side, Dane may just pull something off that will get him started on the road to a successful life in entertainment. Dane will be heading off to Hollywood (Los Angeles) in July this year and will be staying in a hotel that is actually the largest hotel in all of Los Angeles, and which will be hosting the 5,000 contestants from 50 countries who are competing. Dane was over the moon when he told me that this once in a lifetime opportunity will take him one big step closer to living the dream! I know Beaches’ people, just like us here at The Rock-itt, wish Dane all the best of luck with his endeavour and all the success in this very prestigious international competition. We will be reporting back on Dane’s progress in our ‘August’ issue.
