The Rock-itt : June 2011
BOUKABOU CD LAUNCH AND REVIEW Last week I received something special that I really thought Beaches’ musos would like to know about. A band called Boukabou had dropped a CD in my letterbox with a note saying that they would be doing a CD launch at the Old Manly Boatshed for their new single, “Inside Out”. I knew of Boukabou but have never heard or seen them play live. I was curious to listen to what they had to offer. As soon as I heard the first sounds waft from the speakers of my CD player I knew I would be having a lot more to do with this very well accomplished outfit. Their new single was quite easy to take in and digest and if you are a Bowie fan then I’d advise you to make sure you are at the Boatshed for the launch on Tuesday June 14 th at 9pm and have the price of a CD in your pocket because “Inside Out” is really great. I won’t go into a lot of statistics on riffs, melodies or word compositions because when you hear this for yourself you will know why I liked it so much. See you at The Shed...... Pete Johnson A few issues back I did a feature on a band who call themselves, “ Calling Mayday”. At the time it was a three girl, one guy band but now since hearing from them last they seem ed to have changed things with the guy leaving and his replacem ent on the drums a girl, transforming them into an all girl outfit who now have things cranking. Whether it was the change in the lineup or the fact four girls playing on stage is looked upon as different, is difficult to say but the girls are out there knocking them dead, playing all over the place and earning a reputation as a really ‘go see’ band. Recently “Calling Mayday” entered the Chick Boom Competition, ‘Chicks with Picks’ at the Sandringham Hotel, Newtown. In their heat they blew them away getting them into the sem i finals. Despite being knocked out by some equally great girl acts, they certainly had made their presence felt. “Calling Mayday” have a whole swag of gigs on the way and their manager, who has a few bands in his stable, has coupled them together with popular Beaches’ band “Kickstone” to play at the Bondi Beach Hotel and the Hornsby Inn, and there is also talk of doing a show at our famous Old Manly Boatshed, which will give an opportunity to those who don’t like leaving the area a good chance of seeing the girls in action. The girls are keen to get one of their own compositions on the air waves and have penned and recorded a few numbers, one of them being a favourite of mine called “I fell Down”. It has a catchy tune and I like the way they have put the words together which are simple yet very easy to take in and like. The Rock-itt will be keeping an eye on these young ladies of rock and it will be interesting to come back to punters every now and then with news about their successes. So keep tuning in and let see what the girls of “Calling Mayday” get up to next. Pete Johnson
