The Rock-itt : April 2011
countryman Lee Seung Soo is already getting himself noticed as a forward play- ing midfielder. Our new Irishman is Mi- chael Daly and he is joined in midfield by Frenchman Thibault Marchal, Sam Jacob arrives with us from New Zealand, Marc Richards arrived from the UK and defend- er Graeme Forbes moves here from Bonnyrigg. Thankfully we still have some of our crucial regulars; Robbie Cattenach, Sean Bowden, Scotty Balderson, David Dodd and Adam Foti are ready for the new campaign, Joey Gibbs is back with us after an adventure in Europe. W e have home grown talent in the shape of Nick Swart, Mitch Macedo, Johnnie Hall and Justin Hayward (returning from Sydney Youth) and last year’s player of the sea- son Jimmy Oates returning to us from CC Mariners Youth. Head Coach Craig Midgley will also be part of the playing squad. There are also a couple of surpris- es to come with Grade 20 players Danny Grant and Jordan Edwards making a name for themselves in pre-season. Last year’s Lucas Neill scholarship winner 16 year old Tonu Liiband finds himself under- study to Kang Ho Lee as first team goal- keeper. More about Tonu next month. On paper we have a really good team, Craig Midgley and assistant coach Richy Williams have really got something to work with, the spirit in the dressing room is good, let’s see what we can do out on the pitch. As I said earlier the pre-season has gone well. W e played minor champions Bonnyrigg at Cromer Park and overcame them with goals from Adam Foti and Rob- bie Cattenach. We then went to Lambert Park to play APIA and should have had the game won by half time but for a little rustiness in front of goal. In the end we went down 3-2, our scorers being Lee Seung Soo and Graeme Forbes. Former Adelaide United striker Robbie Younis scored twice for APIA, one from a brilliant free kick; he will be one to watch again this season. Our final warm up game was against Major Champions Blacktown City on their home ground. It was a terrible day weatherwise with torrential downpours. After a scrappy first half Manly took con- trol in the second, Craig Midgley bringing himself and Justin Hayward off the bench for his first master stroke of the season, Craig opening the scoring closely followed by Justin getting the clincher. A 2-0 away win and a 2-1 home win against 2010’s Major and Minor Champions doesn’t look like a bad way to start the new campaign. The season opened as we went to print with a visit to Sydney United, they have signed A League players Mark Rudin and Ufuk Talay and will have been formidable opponents. Our first home game will be at Cromer Park on Sunday 3rd April, the next home game will be Sydney Olympic on the 17th followed by Rockdale City Suns on the 23rd , allKOat 3pm with 20’s at 1pm. it would be really great to see a Rock-itt contingent at the ground. As a special bonus you can usually hear the band playing at the Time and Time Pub! C’mon down!!! We had hoped that the sensational FIFA approved synthetic pitch planned for the main pitch at Cromer Park would be installed by May. Unfortunately due to budgets this is now more likely to be a September installa- tion. Frankly, we can’t wait!!! As usual we would like to thank Chris Knevitt for his fantastic action photographs. Thanks also to all the sponsors of Manly United and the members of the Manly Warringah Foot- ball Association for their continued support. You can follow Manly United via Facebook @Manlyunited or Twitter @Manlyunited (no gap) or on the club website www.manlyunitedfc.com.au Couldn’t resist this shot, Joel Anscombe enjoying himself immensely against Bonnyrigg! Justin Hayward uncompromising in the tackle against Bonnyrigg Sponsor Manly United and get your restaurant seen, thanks LImani’s!!
