The Rock-itt : March 2011
Well February turned out to be as much fun as it promised for our singer songwriters with more opportunities to show case their talent becoming available on the northern beaches, more songwriting contests and gigs on the off. Last month I had the pleasure to announce that Laurence Atkinson of Radio Northern Beaches would be hosting our local talent in a one hour segment of his Saturday afternoon show from four till five pm. So far the guest acts, Charlie Gradon with Jay Cullen and Tom marvel have impressed Laurence and his listening audience with their performing and songwriting abilities, and the guys thoroughly enjoyed the experience. Tune to 88.7 or 90,3 on Saturdays after 3.00pm to hear some of the talent coming out of the northern beaches. Laurence also has a web site where he is posting som e of the acts www.local-talent.org Acts who perform on air with Laurence receive a recording of their session to take with them. Wednesday night at the Mona Vale Hotel is Open Mic with Jamie and Chris (contact 0466267656 ) this is a great venue with an elevated stage to perform on and a appreciative audience. Last month I had the privilege of catching some excellent acts. Lauren and Colin gave us a set that had us all applauding enthusiastically to their popular classics sound. Lauren’s vocal range coupled with Colin’s prowess with the guitar tells me we should be seeing this duo doing some paid gigs about the beaches. Jeff Stanley is always a stand out performer at the open mics, Jeff is quite the guitar virtuoso as well as a talented songwriter and can be caught gigging about the beaches.. Face The Music at ”LA” Avalon restaurant and bar, a songwriting competition is well under way with heat one and two bringing out some brilliant local talent and the audience wined and dined to the entertainment and were not disappointed. Heat one on the 6 th of Feb was simply brilliant with four very talented acts moving trough to the final. Julie Anne Macgregor only just missed out with her powerful and thought provoking song Invasion Day coupled with the vocals young Corry and a a friend on didgeridoo sent a vibration through the audience. The acts to make it through to the final were, Neesh and Locland Tom as, on Neesh on cello and lead vocals with Lockland on guitar and backing vocals gave Neesh’s song “In A W orld Like Mine” had all ears aware. This young lady is the real deal. Jacob Keysel with his friends, brothers, Will and Harry Morison performed Jacob’s song “Pretender” and gave us a good look at what’s to come from a talented youth looking for a future in music. Tom Marvel also went through to the final with his funky power ballad “Doors Of Perception”. Tom ’s rich vocals lent brilliantly to his song which sounds like a hit just waiting for back up and a producer. Young Bella Kerstens with backup Keys from Gab Portocarrero, made it through with her brilliant little song entitled “What’s His Face” , which sounded like an anthem for any young lady laboured by love and its traps. After the contest most of the acts stayed on to perform a set in the open mic at “LA” and Jacob pulled out his trumpet and gave us a great show with the Morris boys. W ith Neesh and Lockland letting everyone know there is a lot more to this young duo, and Tom Marvel did a set as well and all I can say is,” what a voice”. Bella also did a set with Gab and Jacob’s younger sister Ella Keysel that got everyone’s attention. Julie’s friend Cory did a short set that had me wondering why this young girl isn’t in the competition. Mmm, maybe next time. Heat two of “Face The Music at “LA” Avalon” on the 20th of Feb was simply another outing of the genius that flows from our beaches. The judges Our judges at “LA” Jeff Stanley Julie and friends
