The Rock-itt : January 2011
which has been part of the Australian way of life for so many years. I talked to as many as I could as they went about their tasks of preparation before they actually took to the water to compete and it was obvious through conversation that many of the competitors had joined the Life Saving Association when they were young and had come up through the ranks, starting off as nippers and progressing to the juniors and then seniors. There were also others who had joined much later, and although not having come up through the ranks, their commitment and enthusiasm were just as solid as the long timers. I also learnt that this very demanding sport was happening right the way around Australia wherever there was a beach and although this day's event was local competition between Northern Beaches Clubs, national competition also took place throughout the year where top clubs from each state competed against one another. The next event that The Rock-itt will be covering will be a carnival at Queenscliff Beach on 8th and 9th January, where our new photographer, Bill Sheridan will be in attendance and I can assure you his photo coverage will be no less than spectacular. Just as luck would have it and right at the last moment we received some great shots from Bill Sheridan of past competitions which we have included this month. Welcome aboard Bill and thank you for these magnificent photos.
