The Rock-itt : January 2011
Superhero movies are booming at the moment, with the trend set to continue in 2011 with the release of Thor, Captain America, and the Green Lantern while The Avengers, the revamped Spiderman and Batman 3 (which will be called 'The Dark Knight Rises' set to hit screens in 2012). So it came as a big shock to everyone at Marvel studios when director, John Favreau walked out on the super-popular Iron Man franchise saying he will not direct the third instalment, or have any further part in any future Marvel projects. The reason behind Favreau's departure is said to be due to his disappointment that Marvel went with Joss Whendon instead of himself to direct 'The Avengers'. The nominations for the 2011 golden globes have been announced and there has been more talk about who was not nominated than for who was. Joel and Ethan Cohen's violent western, 'True Grit' starring Jeff Bridges, Matt Damon, and Josh Brolin (released in Australia January 2011) has been overlooked in every major category. The film has been getting rave reviews, which makes the snub even more surprising. Instead the voting committee has given numerous nominations to films such as: 'Black Swan' (Jan 13), 'The Fighter' (Jan 20), 'The Kings Speech' (Dec 26), 'Inception', and 'The Social Network'. Best Motion Picture - Drama Nominees: Black Swan (2010) The Fighter (2010) Inception (2010) The King's Speech (2010) The Social Network (2010) Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture - Drama Nominees: Jesse Eisenberg for The Social Network (2010) Colin Firth for The King's Speech (2010) James Franco for 127 Hours (2010) Ryan Gosling for Blue Valentine (2010) Mark Wahlberg for The Fighter (2010) Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture - Drama Nominees: Halle Berry for Frankie and Alice (2010) Nicole Kidman for Rabbit Hole (2010) Jennifer Lawrence for Winter's Bone (2010) Natalie Portman for Black Swan (2010) Michelle Williams for Blue Valentine (2010) 'Taxi Driver' will always be famous, not only for the "you talking to me" scene, but for being a great movie. Director Martin Scorcese has announced he will once again re- team with academy award winning actor Robert De Niro for 'The Irishman' a story about organised crime. Since Taxi Driver in 1976 Scorcese and De Niro have made 6 films including 'Raging Bull', 'Cape Fear', and 'Goodfellows'. If you looked away for one second, following the plot of 'Inception' it became nearly impossible to follow it, and we have heard that even director Christopher Nolan needed to write down a map to keep up with the dream levels. There is a clear explanation of every moment of each level, it also notes how he worried about how long each sequence would go for, and for where the characters would be. It is hard to read and doesn't reveal any spoilers, but it's interesting to see the process the filmmakers went through when writing the film.
