The Rock-itt : December 2010
The Hoodoo Gurus and The Break at the Manly Fisho's double sell out shows, November 23 & 24, 2010 The Hoodoo Gurus made Fisho's history in November by selling out two shows in a row, showing an amazing feat of strength considering they were on a Tuesday and Wednesday night. The Band is extensively touring Australia to promote their new album 'Purity of Essence' and support their brand new single 'Are You Sleeping'. The band has been spreading the Guru love to the rest of the world, taking in Europe, UK and the US during September / October. The Gurus played festivals in Spain and head line shows in Paris and London before they headed to the US for shows in New York, Massachusetts, Philadelphia, Arlington, San Francisco, Petaluma. CA and wrapping up at the famous Viper Room in Los Angeles. This is the band's ninth studio album comprising of all new songs, showing the world that they clearly still know how to rock! To commence proceedings The Break comprising of Midnight Oil's, Rob Hirst, Martin Rotsey and Jim Moginie, along with The Violent Femmes bass man Brian Ritche take to the stage on both nights to an almost filled room. They successfully pleased both hardened Midnight Oil supporters and general punters in the room with their unique brand of dynamic surf, psychedelic, Sci Fi, twin guitar attack based instrumental music. The band is busy touring Australia with the Guru's and promoting their debut album titled "Church of the Open Sky". Their first song 'Branded' is a strong catchy melodic rock'n offering that gets you lured in, then what follows is an assault of songs testing your imagination and mostly named after famous surf breaks such as 'Cylinders', 'Dump', 'W inkipop' and 'Cyclops' to name a few. To bring you back to reality and familiarity the band performs 'W edding Cake Island' a popular Midnight Oil instrumental to the crowds delight! To add to the unique psychedelic and sci fi sounds of the band, Jim has added to his arsenal an instrument called the "Theremin" where the controlling section consists of two metal antennas which sense the position of the player's hands and control oscillators for frequency with one hand, and amplitude (volume) with the other, so it can be played without being touched. The electric signals, ie. sci fi spacey sounds from the "theremin" are then amplified through speaker systems. The Break are both visually and audibly entertaining where the power of the soundwaves rule the music along with the amazing energy and synchronicity of the band members. Over the two sell-out nights the Hoodoo Gurus delivered a power packed, faultless display of great Aussie rock that they are so famous for. These guys have proven that they can really "rock it out" big time and enjoy doing it at the same time! The set lists changed over both nights but one thing was for sure, the Guru's kept the "hits" coming playing such classics as 'I Want You Back', 'Tojo', 'Poison Pen', 'Come Review and Photos by DaveTozer.com.au To view photos of the night visit www.facebook.com/davetozerphotography
