The Rock-itt : October 2010
Last month I managed to squeeze in the news that Jimmy Oates had been awarded "Player of The Season' by both the Directors and the Coaches of Manly United. At the time I was unaware that midfielder Pascal Julliard had been voted 'Players; Player Of The Season', this fact was announced at a very boisterous end of season party at the excellent Limani's restaurant in Narrabeen last month. Football NSW Director Linda Ward presents Pascal Julliard with his Players Player award Also receiving awards that night for their services to the club were Alice Hall for her sterling work with the Canteen; First Grade team manager Ida Rigoni for her excellent work in keeping the team smart and Vince Macri for his work assisting the coaches and his constant presence at the gate welcoming folks into the games. Departing players, Joey Schirripa and Bradley Swancott were also given awards as recognition of their long service to the club. A couple of weeks later and there was another dinner to celebrate the achievements of Manly United's Youth and Metropolitan League sides. The stars of the night were the Grade 16's who actually won their Major Championship after coming third in the Minor Championship. They overcame Sutherland Sharks in the Grand Final with an Adam Wilson header in the first half of extra time. This team only lost twice in the season and the awesome defence only conceded 13 goals in the 25 game season. They had more to celebrate on the evening of the awards when their goalkeeper, Tonu Liiband was awarded the Lucas Neill Scholarship, presented by Lucas's father, Ed on the night. Tonu is the first goalkeeper to win this award and by the time you read this he will be in the UK training with a couple of Premiership Clubs, he was a very popular winner. Tonu has promised to write a diary of his trip for The Rock-itt magazine so keep reading the magazine. It wasn't only the 16's year, it was a very successful year for Manly United Youth as a whole, the under 18's just missing finals football by goal difference. The under 15's made it to their Grand Final only to go down to a very strong Marconi side. The under 14's also made it to their Grand Final after coming second in the League. The Grade 13's missed out on Finals football but did come second in their league having been shaded for the top spot by Blacktown FC by two lousy points! We sang the praises of our ladies in the last issue of Rock-itt; we must now sing the praises of the Manly Coaches; lead by the awesome duo of Nick Tomaino and Sharon Egger, brilliant work from all. Alice Hall receives her award from MUFC President Keith Pester Ida Rigoni and Vince Macri receive their awards from departing Captain Joey Schirripa and goalkeeper Brad Swancott.
