The Rock-itt : October 2010
libraries with quality reading materials, PM home readers and of course the Literacy backpacks. We were treated to a special opening ceremony of a new basketball court and shelter where senior students performed 'Wipe Out' and junior students sang a song about healthy foods and nutrition with indigenous performer, Shellie Morris. The pride these students had in their school was testimony to the collaboration that has been created between teachers, community members and 'Fountain of Youth'. We spent valuable time in classrooms where we were able to observe not just teaching and learning but respect and cooperation. These schools are a success story but there are many more communities that do not yet have these necessary facilities and resources that we take for granted. Our trip culminated in the 'Walking with Spirits', Beswick community's cultural celebration. We were transfixed by songs and stories told in dance, music, puppetry, fire and film. I watched the moon set, the sun rise and the next day as we walked in Aboriginal Sacred Land I realised that we had to do something. Whether it be in our own classrooms, teaching a powerful lesson to students about Indigenous Australians, collaboratively fundraising within 13 schools to assist in the sponsoring of Literacy Backpacks, maintaining links with these schools through Connected Classrooms and pen pals, finding ways in which we can all help to close the gap in educational inequality, or allowing teachers and students to experience what we have. http://ianthorpes- fountainforyouth.com/ The Peninsula Community of Schools along with Denistone East Public School and Sacred Heart at Mona Vale are collecting the 'Coles Sports for Schools' vouchers to purchase sports equipment to donate to the Katherine Schools group. Like the PCS, the Katherine Schools group consists of 13 schools. Sports equipment is very scarce and any donations of sport equipment would be appreciated.
