The Rock-itt : October 2010
Sharon Cottle 'Saturday Night Jazz' -- Saturday's 8-10pm Kicking off a Saturday evening jazz-fest is 'Saturday Night Jazz' (8-10pm and followed immediately by 'Jazz and All That', presented by Barbara Shorter until midnight) presented by Sharon Cottle and the aforementioned Andrew Goodman-Jones. Settle in for two hours of relaxing and inspiring jazz, with considerable effort spent by the presenters researching information about the artists' played and occasional themes such as recently focusing of "Pure jazz divas". Not an elitist show, 'SNJ' aims to be a bit more inclusive and appeal to a wider audience, from pure fans to novice dabblers in jazz. Sharon also wears numerous other hats for Radio Northern Beaches, including being one of our directors, our self-taught treasurer and station secretary. In fact were Sharon to leave RNB the station may well fall over! Barbara Shorter 'Jazz and All That' -- Wednesday's 3-5pm, Saturday's 10pm-12am Though 'SNL' is a relative newcomer, 'Jazz and All That' (Wed's 3- 5pm and repeated Saturday nights 10pm-12am) is a Radio Northern Beaches jazz stalwart. Presented for many years by Barbara Shorter (though not too many!) who has a professional media background and is well connected with the local community, enabling a high quality of guests on her program. In fact Barbara used to be the face -- or words -- of RNB in the Manly Daily for a weekly column on the stations shows and activities. Barb's (as she probably doesn't enjoy being called) is a lover of the arts and alongside jazz, she finds herself frequenting many a local theatre production and liaising with all manner of thespians and other artistic types. For her sins Barbara has recently rejoined the board of directors at RNB to lend her considerable experience in helping shape the station. Julian Brown 'The Beat' -- Friday's & Saturday's 12-4am More of what falls into the category of shameless self promotion. Having presented 'The Brown Note' on Tuesdays (5.30-7.30) since 2004 and since becoming involved in managing the stations programming, one area of music that greatly interested me and I felt wasn't being represented was electronically produced -- or dance -- music. So almost exactly two years ago I began compiling 'The Beat' for broadcast between midnight and four am every Friday and Saturday night, or more accurately Saturday and Sunday mornings. Unlike the majority of our programming, 'The Beat' has little in the way of presenter input, instead utilising the DJ mix as its main source of content. Be it a local DJ recording themselves at home or in a club, an international act or a classic pre-recorded mix I try to cover as many genres of electronic music as possible, with a current focus on techno and dubstep. Always on the lookout for new local content, if you're interested in submitting a mix, please contact me at firstname.lastname@example.org with Julian Brown
