The Rock-itt : August 2010
John Mazey 'Strange Brew' -- Tuesdays 8.30-10.00pm One of community radios time honoured indulgences is the world of niche music. No matter what your particular bag is musically, it can find a home and an appreciative like minded audience on community radio. In this instance a rather large clue to the music you are liable to hear on this show can be found in its title, 'Strange Brew' (Tuesdays 8.30-10pm) drawing its name from a song by 60's supergroup Cream. John's passion for weird and wonderful rock music from the sixties and seventies may occasional veer towards the norm, but more often than not wildly eclectic choices will emerge from a limitless collection. Fittingly to go alongside wigged out music from the golden era of prog- rock is a suitably low key and laconic presenting style, this is what night time radio always used to be like. A presenter who puts great care into creating the atmosphere for his show, John splendidly insists on turning all the studio lights off and bringing in a spot light, leaving many to wonder quite what is going on in there. Strange indeed. Ron Atkins 'Beaches Brekky Club' - Fridays 7.00-9.00am The Beaches Brekky Club is a long standing popular peninsular institution and a firm favourite at Radio Northern Beaches. Original co-presenter Geoff Stanwell joined together with Ron some five years ago to present a break-fast show, Ron states, "Originally, Geoff and I thought RNB could use a breakfast style program as they are essential to EVERY radio station and it (hopefully) provides an entertaining lead into the day's programs." That it certainly does and The Brekky club is undeniably one of the stations most popular programs with some of the highest levels of listener feedback. Not aping homogenised commercial radio and with a strong local focus The Brekky club hit its first hurdle after two years when co-presenter Geoff Stanwell could no longer present the show, but far from dying The Brekky Club was reborn.... Jane Arakawa 'Beaches Brekky Club' - Fridays 7.00-9.00am Jane had graduated from at very different aspect of RNB, The Radio Players, the stations long standing home for writers, thespians and creative types who bond together over self written and produced radio plays. With Geoff heading off into the sunset (if the sunset is Chatswood Radio) Jane ably stepped up to bat around three years ago. The main presenters have been joined this last year by young and enthusiastic side-kick Brittany, who originally joined the team for work experience and has since become a permanent fixture. The Beaches Brekky Club has become a much loved local gem and is refreshingly free from the cynicism and desperate antics of their commercial rivals. With traffic, weather, local issues, social commentary, giveaways, restaurant reviews and a whole host of other material, it's a great way to start the third best day of the week. with Julian Brown
