The Rock-itt : August 2010
In mid 2009, the universe conspired to bring Melissa, Cron, Tys, Kane and David together to work their asses off making music and performing live. They're a five-piece band originally from all over the world, but now Sydney-based. Mending Melissa's music is described as complex but catchy rock with a progressive edge...together we are Mending Melissa. With regular fixtures on the Sydney music scene, they 've played venues like The Annandale, The Excelsior and The Landsdowne. They recently supported the Salvation Army Oasis Youth Initiative with an outdoor concert as part of the Surry Hills Festival and were the headline act for the Bring It On! festival 2010 in Sydney. This year, via public vote, Mending Melissa were chosen as the NSW Support Act for the Nova Radio "I am with the band" competition - a national band contest with over 1500 artists participating. Cron and Melissa met in college whilst both studying Contemporary Music and over that time they performed together often and started writing songs together. Melissa moved to Australia 3 years ago, Cron more recently and they were fortunate to reconnect. Melissa had started a band on the Gold Coast, but soon after, decided to move to Sydney. Cron and Melissa met other band members whilst holding auditions in Sydney, late 2008. They met Tyson who, though he grew up in Albury, is from a family with deep roots in Freshwater. Tyson's cousin Matt and his wife still live in the area and Matt is the No. 1 support at every gig. Tyson moved to Sydney 3 years ago. Tyson is a carpenter, so early days and late nights are familiar to him. Kane, who has a career in recruitment, is the third drummer Mending Melissa had since forming the band. He is from Kempsey on the Northern NSW coast and played guitar and sang in bands before he joined MM. David is their 2nd bassist and newest member, only joining Mending Melissa in around February this year. He grew up in Sydney. In this last year he studyed jazz bass at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music. Melissa and Cron have been the creative force behind the music with Melissa writing all the lyrics and collaborating with Cron on the music. The process usually begins with Melissa writing a melody on piano or Cron coming up with a guitar riff which they then work on together. Recently Tyson has started to collaborate on the songwriting as well, and the band's identity gels. They are also starting
