The Rock-itt : May 2010
For more photos of events that Dave covers visit www.myspace.com/davetozerphotos It's 9pm and I'm outside the Old Manly Boatshed and can hear U2's 'One Love' echoing from the bowels of the old shed. It's a very inviting sound and as I make my way downstairs I see Boukabou are playing to an intimate but receptive audience. The line up tonight features bass guitarist, Dario Bortolin (INXS, Jimmy Barnes), drummer Paul Wheeler (Sneaky Sound System, Lotel, Icehouse,Choirboys, Adam Brand) and local singer/songwriter/guitarist, Jamel Boukabou. This is an impressive line up of extremely talented and seasoned musicians that regularly play together on the Northern Beaches under the name of Boukabou. Boukabou have a debut album Forward In Reverse (available on itunes) released in 2008 and Jamel tells me nights like tonight are a great way to test new songs and crowd reactions before he goes into the legendary Albert Studios with Wayne Connolly (The Welcome Mat, Knievel) to record his new album. He also says it's a chance for the other two talented musicians to freely create, jam and contribute to Jamel's songs in a fun, relaxed and live environment. To warm things up the band plays a few of their favourite covers including INXS 'Two Worlds Collide', Australian Crawl 'Errol' and a few Oasis songs. By this time the crowd is growing and people are dancing so we are treated to a new song 'One Thing' an upbeat grungy Powderfinger feel with a catchy chorus which is very well received. Then follows a few more new originals 'All These Things' and 'Gone' which are both commercial catchy tunes with the influences of U2, Oasis, REM and Powderfinger. Jamel has the right formula to make music that people will sing, dance and rock to! Apart from his television acting commitments including an upcoming part in Channel Nine's Rescue Special Ops, Jamel is looking to complete his new album and head over to the USA to promote it and play to new audiences. This will include organising performances at the Cat Club, Sunset Boulevard, LA where he has previously played with an all star jam which included musicians; Happenin' Harry, Scotty (LA - Guns) and Dizzy (Keys - Guns N' Roses). The Old Manly Boatshed was a lot of fun with Boukabou clearly enjoying themselves in the party atmosphere with a good sized appreciative crowd which grew during the course of the night.
