The Rock-itt : March 2010
It was a huge night of local punk and alternative rock, with a stack of bands lending their support to the benefit concert for local Northern Beaches singer, Tobias of the band Booze Hag at the Manly Fishos. The bands were The FUMES, Booze Hag , Dr Fruitworld, Future Device, Brown Esky, Crazy Legs, Vermin, Bunt, The DT's and Daredevil. Tobias of Pink Toenail Records, JSA and most recently, Booze Hag, is seriously ill with pulmonary fibrosis of the lungs, due to many years of boat building in the 80's. He requires a double lung transplant and as is currently on the waiting list. To help him with the financial burden, The Little Birdy Agency have been organising benefit shows around the nation with some high profile artists lending their time. I first met Tobias when I was owner/engineer of Crystal Clear Studios and recorded JSA's kick arse EP. I liked the band so much to include them on the studio's first compilation CD "When the Fat Cat Sings" which was nationally distributed. Great bunch of Northern Beaches guys who had a very tight and original sounding punk band with Tobias having an amazing energetic and in your face stage presence. My good friend Tedi attended the concert, took photos and here's what he said, "Its Friday night at the Fisho's and the benefit concert for Tobias of Booze Hag is in full thump. A few friendly bands have lined up to support the lead singer of Booze Hag in his time of need. He is stricken with scar tissue on the lungs. The ex-carpenter, Tobias lounges on set in a bright red psychedelic vinyl chair. He has trouble breathing and has a predicted number of months to live. This does not stop him and his band belting out song statements about the demise of the glass milk bottle and a society heading for the shitters onto song homage for Banjo Patterson." I got in contact with Tobias and here's what he had to say : "Yeah I went and got myself an auto connective tissue disorder called scleroderma, meaning thick skin in Latin but mine has attacked my lungs i.e. pulmonary lung fibrosis. This means I may have to have a double lung transplant in the not too distant future. Mates got together and decided to put the show on at the Fishos to raise funds to help as the disease has left me very short of breath and unable to continue working as a carpenter. The night was f**kin great with all bands rockin it out large. Big surprise with Daredevil havin' guest front man Ben Brown (of Hellmenn fame) jumpin' up and smashin' out 4 rippers. In fact all the bands smashed the sh*t out of their sets. The DT's, Brown Esky, Crazy Legs, Vermin, Future Device, Bunt, the reformed Dr Fruitworld (my favourites from the good old days) and the Fumes. Lookin at the bands I realized I had known most of the f**kers for 15 to 25 years. A very humbling experience to say the least. Cheers to you and all the wonderful people who turned up on the best night of my life. Oh yeah and Booze Hag were real sh*t house as usual!" The night was a huge success with a near capacity crowd that almost drunk the Fishos dry of booze! We all wish Tobias all the very best in fighting his condition, urge people to support his cause by attending any future benefits and hope that he gets the lung transplants he so urgently requires.
