The Rock-itt : February 2010
With Damien O'Brien NSW Little Athletics 2009 State Relay Championships It seems some time ago now but the Christmas break and school holidays did little to wipe away memories of sensational achievements from Manly Warringah athletes competing in the biggest event on the NSW Little Athletics calendar, The State Relay Championships. Late 2009 saw many local youngsters enter the mighty Sydney Olympic Park Athletics cauldron to take on athletes from across the state. The championships are an exciting and hugely popular event providing athletes with the chance to compete not only at a state level but as part of a team in track or field relays. Success could be found over all distances on the track with medals being captured in sprint and longer distance relays across most age groups. However, highlighting Manly Warringah's ability and focus on developing athletes across all disciplines was the huge haul of medals also achieved in field event relays including some state record breaking performances. Leading the records charge were the little leaping lasses in the under-8's who cruised over all before them to claim gold in the 4 x Long Jump event. Showing that the boys from the Peninsula also love the sand, the under-9 boys achieved the same outstanding results in the 4 x Long Jump. Manly Warringah athletes were not happy simply breaking records jumping in the sand with both the under-10 boys and under- 17 girls' teams taking flight and gold in their Long/High Jump relays. Many records were also set across track events but the new electronic timing system meant that all fastest times this year were labelled 'new state records'...so it's probably best to say congrats to all winning track teams because it looks like you should have a state record to add to your gold medal. The State Relays were once again a happy stomping ground for local athletes. Among what proved a feast of spectacular results for Manly Warringah athletes, other gold medal performances included the under-8 girls 4 x 100m, under-9 mixed 4 x 200m, under-10 mixed 4 x 400m, under-10 girls 4 x 100m, under-8-11 girls 4 x 800, and the under-12 girls 4 x100m. Not to be outdone, many more teams took home medals however every team can be proud of their achievements against some of the best talent the
