The Rock-itt : February 2010
picture of what you want and then believe it's OK to go for it. My first success came from doing well singing for my HSC, later, when I was in my 20's joining bands and beginning my very successful pub talent quest career I defiantly reflected on that time to push me along. I think winning a few competitions showed me that I did have something and people liked to hear it, but the rest had to come from an undying enjoyment of the thing I love to do for the sake of itself, followed by one step after another. What is your instrument of choice? I play the guitar and I love it, I always look forward to the times I can fool around with my writing. How did you win the U.S awards? I entered a couple of songs through Sonicbids and I was surprised when I got responses back that my songs had won major prizes, so I jumped on a plane and went over to check out the Nashville and LA scenes. What a blast, it's so great to be an Aussie in the U.S. I got some great feedback and major label interest and a college radio campaign. It was absolutely an whirlwind and so much fun. There will probably be a tour at some stage. You also won the Rudy Brandsma Award! Yes, I was given a beautiful Maton guitar and trophy -- lucky me. I was really surprised to win actually. I stood in a line of the nominees at the front of the stage thinking "oh well" because all the other award winners had been set up backstage ready to perform while their category award was being announced, so I was quite shocked to have been the winner standing out the front. Who is your all time favourite idol and why? I have many idols in a range of styles, but for me it's mostly soul singers and good lyric writers. Soul singers because their vocals were so incredible and the melodies so masterfully written, lyric writers because of their ability to take an idea, like say.. a first touch .. and use steel bars or ruby velvet for example to compare it to. It can take you to another world. How do you find balancing your solo career with the Motown shows and other commitments like family etc? It works quite well as long as I don't have too many mid week commitments. Most of the time my work is outside daylight hours so I can still spend lots of time with everyone.
