The Rock-itt : January 2010
recovering from a broken leg sustained at the end of last season. Robbie will hopefully be fully fit for the start of the new season as will Brad Swancott's regular goalkeeping deputy, Rhys Keane who has had a shoulder operation. After five minutes striker Justin Hayward, elevated from the 18's squad took a bad kick to the ankle and had to be replaced by his brother Andrew who spent the afternoon being kicked all over the park by the Bonnyrigg defence. He didn't seem too upset when I saw him at the end of the game, I would have been in tears and asking for my Mummy! The game was great value 1-1 at half time, Manly forged ahead in the second half and a couple of strikes by Andrew Mailer had United out at 3-1 with 13 minutes to go. How Andrew Mailer and Joey Shirippa are not playing A League football is beyond me, especially looking at what is being served up at pedestrian pace in the A League at the moment. Returnees Roberto Hamad and Pasqual Juilliard both had brilliant games in midfield, Berto having to be taken off before the end and taken to hospital with a nasty bang to the cheek bone. To their credit Bonnyrigg never gave up and a defensive error gifted them a second goal followed by a well worked attack which saw them level before the end. I was concerned that the team has started to play at such a high tempo this far ahead of the season but 20's trainer Richy Williams said that training so far has not been full on and that they haven't started doing any serious running yet. Could have fooled me, the game was excellent, bring on 2010. There are quite a few more preparation/friendly games to come early in the New Year but the first home friendly is not until February 18th against Super League side Northern Tigers. Games scheduled at Edgeworth (Newcastle) 16th January, Kick off 20's 2pm Firsts 4pm. Blacktown City 23 January Kick off 20's 5pm, Firsts 7pm. Central Coast United 31 January, kick off 20's 2pm, Firsts 4pm. Bankstown Lions 7 February Kick off 20's 5pm, Firsts 7pm. Sydney Olympic 14 February kick off 20's 5pm, Firsts 7pm. The first game scheduled at the rejuvenated Cromer Park will be the A League Youth game between Sydney FC and Gold Coast United on Saturday 16 January kick off 4pm, we expect a healthy crowd for this exciting fixture. Anything to add send to email: Manlyfan@bigpond.com.au Kiwi International Rhys Keane will hopefully back between the sticks by the start of the season Andrew Mailer, how he hasn't been snapped up for the A League is a mystery Phil Moss (in white) talks with Jimmy Oates and Andrew Hayward after the Bonnyrigg game
