The Rock-itt : January 2010
Cricket on the Northern Beaches with Simon Lyon Manly Warringah District Cricket Club has beaten Fairfield Liverpool in all 5 Grades on this last weekend before Christmas, an achievement which rarely occurs. Last year the Club beat Mosman in all Grades to secure the Peter Philpott Trophy, which was the first time this feat had been recorded in 3 seasons. This round had several highlights, but the best of all would have to be the innings of 200 by the new 1st grade Captain, Adam Crosthwaite. Whilst Adam would have been pleased with this he would have been more proud of the way that his team patiently broke down the Fairfield batting line up, thanks to good bowling all round. In second Grade Dave Poskitt took 7 wickets at Manly Oval to keep the visitors down to 240 all out and Manly finished them off on Sunday with the two Lukes (Edgell 130 and Cameron 96) making light of their total. In 3rd Grade, Craig Little's team made sure that their early season form continued, which keeps them firmly at the top of the table. 4th Grade won a toughly contested match at L M Graham's Reserve thanks to a superb innings of 70 by Lance Stewart, which held the side together and 5th Grade routed their opponents by bowling Fairfield out for 43 on Day two, having already won the match on Day 1, thanks to a fine spell of bowling by Jarrod Baker (5-8) and took maximum points in an outright victory. So pleasing for the Club was the fact that the younger guys stood up, with Matt Alexander taking 5 wickets for 9 runs off his 6 over spell. Matt was on a hat trick twice in his spell but wasn't lucky enough to make the milestone. With Nick McCallum Toomey and Luke Grant taking two (which included another hat trick opportunity) it was left to Mick Lindsay to polish off the innings, which he did first ball. Louis Anderson, following on from his first innings of 64, knocked off the remaining runs with his good friend Matt Alexander and the Manly Boys rushed off to watch their second grade colleagues at Manly Oval. Women's Cricket is back on the Northern Beaches Will the ladies on the Northern beaches turn out to watch cricket? Sadly the crowds for the WNCL at Manly last weekend where the Grade Club played hosts to NSW Breakers vs the Vic Spirit (Victorian Ladies) were very disappointing, as they were for the Women's World Cup. The Breakers were cruising to victory until Kristen Beams' leg spin spell of 4-25 off 10 overs tore through the strong NSW girls' line up. With so many Australian players in the NSW side, the weekend's performances were most disappointing. Manly Cricket Club once again did a marvellous job of hosting the 3 matches with the help of its usual band of volunteers (Ross Wiblin, Allan Wright, Sean Rout & Matt Alexander with 5-9 off 6 ov ers Jarrod Baker 5-8 Luke "Bomber" Edgell 130 in 2nd Grade
