The Rock-itt : January 2010
African birds including the 5 macaw parrots from hell!!! So a normal day for me and the volunteers would consist of getting up at 6.45am to bottle feed all the baby big cats and springbok, then at 7.30am we would start getting all the food dishes ready for all the other animals, then delivering the individual food to each cage, in which there was about 50-60 cages! Breakfast for us volunteers was at 10am, and then random jobs like cleaning food dishes and cages out followed till 1pm then lunch. At 2pm we would start getting the second feed ready and once again delivered it to the waiting animals. Then it was more random jobs again like bringing the cows in without getting trampled on, cuddling the baby animals and locking away the loose baby emus till 5pm. Dinner was served at 6pm then washing up was to be done. There was free time to hang out with the other volunteers, watch movies or play cards till 10pm, at which was the last bottle feeding. Yep, I meant it when I said hard work!! Although they don't always have baby animals that needed feeding at 10pm, I was glad that they did as it was a wonderful experience! Now it wasn't all hard work and no play, I got to meet so many wonderful likeminded people! We had a lot of fun doing the work together, so many crazy stories! We also got 2 days off every 5 days and in those days off I had a blast!! So many exciting adventures with these new awesome people that had suddenly become my best friends within a week! We went galloping along the most beautiful beach I had ever seen, 4 hour sunset Safari, ostrich riding, zip lining, accidental cheetah feeding with an unfortunate rooster. But these stories you will have to read in the next issue of The Rock-itt when I will continue my story... Until next time kids, live the life you dream!
