The Rock-itt : January 2010
Growing up on Sydney’s Northern Beaches, Nick Maybury was always destined for greatness. For as long as I can remember Nick was always leading the pack with his freakish musical ability on the guitar. One of my first musical memories of Nick was supporting him on stage in year 8 - 1996 at "Strictly Balgowlah" while he preformed "Purple Haze" by Jimi Hendrix. I think that was the moment that everyone knew the difference between having talent and being gifted, Nick being the latter. He has always played the guitar and understood music in a way hard to explain, always one step ahead of everyone else. In 2006 Nick signed to Rock and Roll band MINK and toured Australia with Jimmy Barnes and Angeles and Airwaves first before moving abroad to America to complete the debut album , which then lead to touring all over the USA, Canada and Japan with the likes of "Perry Farrell and Satellite Party" Kiss and Saliva. During this time Nick made countless valuable music contacts. From there, Nick found he had made a special connection with singer, Perry Farrell, famous from "Jane's Addiction" which I was amazed to hear as Nick and I used to play "Jane's Addiction" songs for fun back at High School (Balgowlah Boys) in the music room at lunch times he couldn’t stop singing and playing "Jane Says", these days Nick is working together on new music in LA with Perry looking forward to 2010 soon to be releasing the new sound together. Playing recently at Perrypallooza for Perry’s Birthday in Las Vegas earlier this year in 2009, Nick shared the stage with Jane’s Addiction, Porno for Pyro’s, Billy Idol, Debbie Harry, Dave Navarro, Pete DiStefano, Mat Sorum, Tom Morello, and Juliet Lewis to name a few. As well as a handful of other musical projects, Nick juggles promoting in Hollywood and working with Moods Of Norway lifestyle fashion label, he is also working on his own brand of music titled "Niky May" a name that was suggested to him by Gene Simmonds from Kiss on the road. Nick Says - "Niky May is a new thing for me. It’s my creativity extended using computer and electronic sounds, loops I’m creating without a band. So far I’m making beats arrangements into new tracks in Abelton live. It’s my own guitar playing, vocals, programming and various other sounds using audio and visual combined. I’ve used Stella from MINK to lay down a drum track...so it’s got a hybrid human element. It’s still in early stages..." "The sound is apocalyptic, gritty and psychedelic, but keeping it fun and party at the same time! I have drawn from a lot of day to day influences in LA getting around on the train and bus hanging with the real people and getting a true taste of the city. It has relief with some fun and happy sounds too, but the depths really are primitive and deep from within the soul...when it reaches the live stage it will be an audio visual experience. The visuals are shaped by the sounds in sync. I want to blow people’s minds sonically and visually...take them to another realm". Nick is back from America for only a few more weeks before returning to LA to continue on his musical journey.
