The Rock-itt : December 2009
Café Carnivale Season Two "Tango Bar" concludes the 2009 Season at Glen Street Theatre. The Tango is a distinctive musical sound which is often accompanied by a particular style of dance called precisely that, the Tango. At Glen Street's Café Carnivale last month, the audience were entertained by a group calling themselves "Tango Bar". The group consists of four talented musician/singers and put on a splendid performance to the delight of a very active audience who showed their enthusiasm by getting on the dance floor and kicking up their heels to the wonderful beat of the Tango. The group consists of four members, Jaenette McKillany (violin), Paul Techera (Bandouean), Miguel Guzman and Justo Diaz both playing guitar and are the group's vocalists. Justo Diaz came to Australia in the late 1970s and became part of the team which organises Café Carnivale. Initially taught guitar by his mother, he later learnt the flute. With others, Justo opened "La Pena", a meeting place for people from South America and provided information and assistance for Uruguayans migrating to Australia. He joined Café Carnivale in 2003 as Music Director. At the show at Glen Street Theatre last month, furniture was re-arranged in Sorlies Restaurant to provide a dance floor. The tempo of the music played by "Tango Bar" soon had people up on the floor dancing the "Tango". Jaenett's Violin brought compelling, pulsating sounds revealing the colour of South America and with the rest of the musical instruments blending in it was an exhilarating trip through authentic folk to the modern Tango. A Merry Xmas to all, take care and I will catch up with you again next season at Glen Street Theatre.
