The Rock-itt : December 2009
Special Christmas Concert with Shalom Andrews Tuesday 15 December, 11am As the Christmas season approaches join Shalom Andrews in a special Christmas concert. Collaborating with her is the outstanding Mark Harris Trio featuring some of Sydney's leading musicians. As an extra treat, talented opera singer Tina Harris will be joining them as a guest performer. The audience will be immersed in the Christmas spirit as they sing-along with traditional carols such as Silent Night, Hark the Herald Angels Sing and Away in the Manger. They will also be entertained with popular Christmas songs such as Rudolf the Red Nose Reindeer and Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas. Shalom is an accomplished performer who has sung in Australia, U.S.A and Canada. She performed with Mark Harris' band in the past two Music at the Glen seasons with a show paying homage to 1930s-50s screen sirens. Glen Street Theatre is thrilled to invite her and Mark back this year for a special Christmas concert. Growing up in the Frenchs Forest area and singing in Forestville church choir at the age of 5 years old, Shalom gained a love of music that has remained with her. She learnt the flute for nine years, completed an acting degree and attended WAAPA in Perth to study arts management. She follows in the footsteps of her grandfather who worked with J.C. Williamson's touring theatre productions and managed Sydney's State Theatre. Shalom met guest performer Tina Harris at university and was immediately struck by her beautiful classical voice. They performed together in an 'Andrews Sisters' style group with songs like "Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy" and "Bei mir bist Du schön." Tina's career has spanned work with Opera Australia to her current success with Lah-Lah's Big Live Band which is presently on Children's Television. This is the first time since university that Shalom and Tina will perform together again. Their combined talents can be compared to the pairing of Judy Garland and Deanna Durbin and they look forward to entertaining audiences with their kind of energy and elegance. Shalom says "I am delighted to be returning to the area I grew up in to perform such beautiful Christmas songs. I think they have a wonderful power to make you stop and realise that Christmas is not only about crazy last minute shopping, but it's a time to reflect on the year, and find compassion for others. That sounds very lofty, but I truly believe that music can have that positive effect." SEASON DETAILS: SHALOM ANDREWS Venue: Glen Street Theatre, Cnr.
