The Rock-itt : October 2009
OUR ANGIE'S OFF TO THE AFRICAN JUNGLE Former Rock-itt Calendar Girl and Beaches' lovable larrikin ladette, Angie Petith, is off on the adventure of a life time. Angie flew out to Africa on Sunday and will be bringing back a series of her adventure for our Travel Writer section in December. Hello fellow Rock-itteers! My name is Angie and my good friend Pete has asked me to tell you all about a little trip I'm going on... So I had a month's annual leave up my sleeve and no idea what to do with it. I know that I'm restless and I wanted to do something different. Lazing around beaches all day and clubbing at night in any country is always fantastic, don't get me wrong, but I have done it over and over again, and I felt it was time to do something different! So after talking with other random travellers about their most rewarding experience and combining my own biggest love, I have decided to do volunteer work with wild animals in South Africa.......by myself! Yikes! I found a company called i-to-i (meaningful travel) on the internet and they have organised for me to go to a sanctuary in Port Elizabeth called "African Dawn" located near one of the best surfing spots around and also famous for swimming with the great white sharks, the beautiful Jeffery's Bay. My duties include feeding, cleaning and cuddling all the creatures that live on the sanctuary plus helping to release the injured wildlife that are well enough to head back out to the beautiful plains of Africa. I will be staying in a dormitory with 10 beds inside, sharing this new bedroom with other animal loving drifters from around the world. No TV, no pubs, no INTERNET!!!! Not sure how I will survive as yet, but I'm bright eyed and bushy tailed! I leave tomorrow (which is the 4/10/09) on the red eye to embark on my new adventure. How will I go? You'll have to stay tuned to find out! SOPHIE MARIE BACK AT FISHOS Like attracts like. Birds of a feather flock together. Great bands like to play with great bands. Okay, you might not be familiar with the last cliché, but its a creed that many Sydney bands live by and a philosophy certainly held by female rocker, Sophia Marie. Given the opportunity to invite her own line up for her third outing to Manly Fishos for this year on Saturday the 7th of November, Sophia knew exactly who she wanted on stage with her. "I wanted a ladies rock night", says Sophia. "I read a review of my album in another Sydney newspaper that said Australia needed more female rockers and I thought to myself, this guy needs to get out more often! There is so much talent in Sydney and I wanted to have the talented ladies on stage together for a kick ass girls appreciation evening." The 7th of November will see End of Aeon, The Cursing Stone and Amodus take to the stage with Sophia Marie for what promises to be a wild night of hardcore female influenced rock. Sophia Marie, End of Aeon and the Cursing Stone are all female fronted bands with male musicians, whilst Amodus are a male fronted band with female musicians. "I met the guys from End of Aeon just after I arrived in Sydney two years ago", says Sophia. "I was impressed by their sound and about how hard they worked to promote their music. End of Aeon have been around for years using a past name of Anjeliina, but since then, have changed singers and music direction all together to form something new and intricate. I've known The Cursing Stone for awhile now too and we're good friends. I love their debut album and play it regularly in my car. I was turned onto Amodus by the Manly Fisho's venue coordinator. I checked out their music on myspace and just thought yeap their great!" All in all, Sophia Marie has done a great job in picking a lineup that will deliver a consistent hard rock/metal vibe from bands who all have strong vocal melodies at the heart of their music. The fact that the lineup will also be showcasing the best female talent in Sydney's rock scene in one place is just an extra reason to buy a ticket and enjoy a great night out! OUR FAMOUS MR FLYNN Around 30 years ago someone wrote the most denigrating book ever written about our Aussie movie legend, Errol Flynn. In this issue, The Rock-itt decided to let people really know that most of what was written was here say and idol malicious gossip, and why it should be thrown off the cliff of oblivion and forgotten forever.
