The Rock-itt : September 2009
Awesome, it seems that everyone is really taking to the new format Open Mic and we are seeing many new faces on a Wednesday evening at the Surf Rock Beach Hotel. Along with this format change was the opportunity to promote our "Best of" Open Mic performers by giving them a "prime time" spot with extra performance time to show exactly what they are made of. I thought I would use this column to look back a few weeks and mention those outstanding Open Mic-ers. Dementia - "Young at heart" does not do these guys justice. These three rock harder than any "youngsters" that I know! Using the absolute limit of the stage as well as the limit of the sound restrictions, Dementia is a god ol' rock band. They remind me what is so great about playing music...Fun! Casey - a wizard of guitar effects and a master of the mash-up, Casey is something completely unique. This time he chose an acoustic guitar as his weapon of mass destruction, but don't thing that meant none of his trademark loops and crazy guitar acrobatics. A real treat for everyone in the audience that night. Tristan Haze - Having just released their debut EP, Tristan Haze have magically morphed into a 3 piece. Along with the line up change has come a new dynamic and a new attitude! Direz, now on drums, brings the rock whilst Tristan's melodic vocals still cut through the intense snarl of his now electrified guitar. Check em out! Matt Connor - One of the original and best Open Mic-ers, Matt is no stranger to the Collaroy stage. Having been away for a while, he was back with a vengeance, showing us his versatility and talent. As his set went on he was joined by some amazing musicians who, one by one, formed a band and delivered a final song including drums, solos, rap and some heavy bass. Keep an eye out for future acts such as Lemonade playing at the Beach Hotel in the following weeks! If think you or a friend would like to perform at Open Mic, please give me a call as spots are limited and always in high demand. No Demos or previous performance experience is necessary. It WILL change your life! Please call Simon on 0410 612 496 if you would like to perform at the Northern Beaches Open Mic.
